Umar Gul took a wicket first ball, Shahid Afridi took two in his first two balls, and Australia imploded bizarrely after a flying start from Shane Watson. From 42 for 0 in four overs Australia went to 73 for 5 and 108 all out, a target Pakistan chased down easily after an early wobble. Australia had fielded almost a second XI, and played like that.

The first innings of the match was as frenetically eventful as the second was assured and sedate. Gul’s 4-0-8-4 was just one run off the best-ever figures in Twenty20 internationals. Afridi followed his double-wicket maiden with another wicket and nine more runs in the next two overs, as the Australian batsmen kept playing for the non-existent spin. The collapse was just as spectacular as Watson’s onslaught on Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir. It was ironically a missed inside edge by Aleem Dar that started the slide.

No less a bizarre innings would have been fit for a day when the match started one-and-a-half hours after the toss while waiting for Dubai’s Sheikh, an esteemed guest for the match. A day when Younis Khan pulled out at the 11th hour because of fever. A day when Misbah-ul-Haq, the stand-in captain, said at the toss that Younis stepped down to give Fawad Alam an opportunity.

The delayed start didn’t affect Watson, who seemed to be carrying on from his century in the final one-dayer. He started the match with an outside-edged boundary off Shoaib, didn’t get much strike for the next three overs, and exploded in the fourth. He carted Tanvir for back-to-back boundaries through midwicket, and pulled the next to deep backward square leg. In four overs, Watson had reached 33 off 13 deliveries, with Misbah seeming out of sorts.

He was in complete control, though, hurrying the introduction of perhaps the best Twenty20 bowler in international cricket. With his first ball Gul went level with Daniel Vettori, with most wickets in Twenty20 internationals. The ball swung in late, hitting Watson in front, but for the inside edge that Dar missed. Gul would soon go past Vettori.

Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds could start playing for the Deccan Chargers in the IPL as early as Saturday, as he looks to fly out of Dubai on Friday, a day after the Twenty20 international against Pakistan. Symonds will have to reach Kimberley in South Africa for Deccan’s next clash against Kings XI Punjab.

Among the contingent currently in the UAE, Brett Lee (Kings XI Punjab), David Hussey (Kolkata Knight Riders), Shane Watson (Rajasthan Royals), Nathan Bracken (Royal Challengers Bangalore) and James Hopes (Kings XI Punjab) are also expected to joint their IPL franchises from Saturday.

“Andrew has obviously missed a lot of cricket in the last little while, and he’s keen to get out there and play as much as he can,” Matt Fearon, Symonds’ manager, said. “He has loved being back and performing with the Australian team, and he is looking forward to getting over to South Africa to join the boys at Deccan.”

Symonds was recalled to the Australian team after a couple of suspensions for off-field behaviour. He scored 58 and took 2 for 12 to guide his team to a six-wicket win in the second ODI against Pakistan in Dubai, a breakthrough performance after fearing the series might be his last as an international.

Australia had held on to their players till the end of the Pakistan series, but are now keen for them to play in the IPL ahead of the World Twenty20 in England next month.

“We aren’t standing anyone down from going to the IPL after the Pakistan series,” Andrew Hilditch, the Australian chairman of selectors, said.

Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, has said there is a possibility that the tactical time-out in the middle of each team’s innings could be changed from one interval of seven and a half minutes to two breaks of two and a half minutes each for the semi-finals and final of the second season of the IPL.

“It’s not frozen yet but we are looking at two aspects. There will be two two-and-a-half-minutes break per innings, so the break in all during an innings will be of five minutes,” Modi told NDTV. “The first two-and-a-half-minute break will be just after the Powerplay [6 overs] and the second to be taken by the fielding side at any time.

“It happens in every sport, there is a strategy break and everything. But 7.5 minutes may look like a bit longer, so we are seeing how we can reduce it down to five minutes” However, he said that the idea was yet to be ratified by the tournament’s technical committee.

The tactical time-out has played a part in shifting the momentum in the Twenty20 games and has usually benefited the fielding team with the batting side losing wickets in the overs immediately after the break. It was criticised by Sachin Tendulkar, the Mumbai Indians captain who felt that the breaks were “hampering the momentum of a team”, Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody and VB Chandrasekhar, Chennai Super Kings’ head of cricket operations.

Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan had called for the number of overseas players in a XI to be increased from four but Modi said it was not going to happen. “This is the Indian Premier League,” he told the Indian Express. “The focus is on getting local talent and I have shoved away the idea of increasing the number of foreigners.”

West Indies have reluctantly given Chris Gayle permission to extend his day with Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL by two days if he wants to play an extra game. It means he could arrive in England just 48 hours before the first Test at Lord’s, which will leave him precious little time to adjust to conditions.

With poor batting and inclement weather robbing West Indies of much-needed momentum ahead of the Test series, the tourists are now bracing for Gayle to remain in South Africa longer than originally agreed.

“The West Indies Cricket Board has been informed of this development and has agreed for him to arrive in England on Monday, May 4 if it becomes necessary,” Omar Khan, the West Indies team managed, confirmed to reporters at Derby where they are playing England Lions, but also admitted it would “not be ideal preparation for a Test match.”

Fresh from a 1-0 Test series victory in the Caribbean – a win that moved them within sight of sixth-ranked England on the ICC table – the West Indians have experienced a substantial reversal of fortunes since arriving in England. Already without the services of star allrounder, Dwayne Bravo, who was mysteriously ruled out of the Test series on medical grounds but cleared to play in the IPL, West Indies are desperately in need of Gayle’s services after indifferent batting displays against Essex and England Lions.
