In the first semi-final of IPL T20 season 2, Delhi Daredevils were the favorites to win the match against Deccan Chargers. However, Deccan Chargers captain had something else in mind. In Match 32 of the IPL T20 season 2, Adam Gilchrist won the toss and put Mumbai Indians to bat. Deccan Chargers could only reach 145/6 in 20 overs with the help of useful innings from Rohit Sharma (38 off 36 balls), Venugopal Rao (28 off 17 balls) and Adam Gilchrist (25 off 29 balls). It seemed to be an easy chase for the Mumbai Indians but it seemed that the Mumbai Indians batsmen had got habituated to the art of choking every time they took a start. Even a valuable half century by J P Duminy (52 off 48 balls) and Pinal Shah (29 off 19 balls) could not save them from a defeat as the whole Mumbai Indians lineup tumbled and could reach only 126/8 in 20 overs. The special feature of the innings is that Rohit Sharma took the second hat-trick of IPL T20 season 2 as he bagged the wickets of Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh and J P Duminy in consecutive deliveries. After the hat-trick he also took another wicket leaving only one ball in between. The best bowling figures for Deccan Chargers were of Rohit Sharma, R P Singh and Tirumalsetti Suman with figures of 4/6, 2/19 and 2/14 respectively. Rohit Sharma was awarded the Man of the Match for his valuable innings of 38 runs off 36 balls and his bowling spell of 4 wickets for 6 runs in 2 overs.

Deccan Chargers were at the last position in IPL T20 season 1 while Chennai Super Kings were the finalist last year. But times have changed and fortunes also seemed to have changed as the match results showed. Adam Gilchrist won the toss and put Chennai Super Kings to bat. Though Chennai Super Kings lost a few wickets but due to a brilliant innings by Matthew Hayden (49 off 35 balls), they were cruising at 88/2 after 10 overs. But then the CSK batsmen struggled and failed to capitalize on the terrific start and ended at 165/6 in 20 overs. Pragyan Ojha was good with the ball for the chargers and took 2 wickets for 11 runs in 2 overs. Deccan Chargers started their innings with sixes and fours throughout the ground by Adam Gilchrist (44 off 19 balls) and Hershelle Gibbs (69 off 56 balls) and they reached 60 in merely 4 overs. Though Chennai Super Kings tried to take a few wickets and curb down the run rate but it was too late and Deccan Chargers cruised to 169/4 in 19.3 overs. Suresh Raina did well for the Super Kings with 2 wickets for 18 runs. Hershelle Gibbs was awarded the Man of the Match for his splendid innings of 69 runs off 56 balls.

Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders have both changed their captains and Deccan Chargers are led by Adam Gilchrist while Kolkata coach had been floating the idea of multiple captains for KKR. But Brendon Mccullum was declared the captain for this match and they hoped that the change of captaincy would enhance the team’s performance. Mccullum won the toss and decided to bat first. They were quite pathetic with the bat and except Brad Hodge (31 off 34 balls) they failed to impress. The Knight Riders were bundled out for 101 runs in 19.4 overs. R P Singh shone with the ball scalping 4 wickets for 22 runs. The Deccan Chargers cruised through and reached the target in 13.1 overs with great performances by Hershelle Gibbs (43 off 26 balls) and Rohit Sharma (36 off 32 balls). R P Singh won the Man of the Match for his bowling performance.
