India’s wretched run the Super Eight Group E in the ICC World Twenty20 came to a bitter end at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, the defending champions failing to reach the modest target set by South Africa. India had  a great chance to treat the packed ground to a consolation victory but the fans were let down again by the team’s batsmen.

And it was evident how wrong coach Gary Kirsten had been in suggesting that he had not been able to connect to the players because of the Indian Premier League – the South African team management did not seem to have any such issues, even if many of their players were also busy with their respective franchises.

For all that, India head home after another batting failure even though their slow bowlers turned in a heart-warming show in bowling 14 overs to give the team a chance to score a consolation win. The Indian batsmen lost their way against South Africa’s spinners whose nine overs saw them concede just 32 runs and take five wickets.

Riding on a well constructed 63 by AB de Villiers (51 balls, seven fours), South Africa made 130 for five in 20 overs, struggling through 14 overs of spin. The Indian slow bowlers – as many as five of them – conceded just 75 runs and took three wickets to keep the South African total down to manageable levels.

Despite getting off to a sound start of 48 runs by Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma in the first six overs, India crumbled when spin was introduced. Johan Botha claimed the wickets of Gambhir and Suresh Raina in successive overs while fellow off-spinner Jean-Paul Duminy scalped Rohit Sharma in his only over to push India’s challenge back.

Yet again, it was down to whether Yuvraj Singh would be able to pull the chestnuts out of the fire but with Mahendra Singh Dhoni getting run out, his task became that much more difficult. Yuvraj and Harbhajan Singh tried hard to match the mounting asking rate, it was clear that South Africa’s allround bowling had the men to stop India.

South Africa had been stopped at 128 by New Zealand at Lord’s but the side succeeded in eking out a one-run win over the Black Caps earlier in the tournament, relying on their faster bowlers but on Tuesday, it was their spinners who delivered the knockout punch. It is hard to overlook the fact that left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe bowled 14 dot balls in his four over spell.

South Africa have not been beaten in the ICC World Twenty20 and will meet Pakistan in the semifinal in Trent Bridge on Thursday while Sri Lanka will take on the West Indies in the other semifinal at the Oval on Friday.

As for India, it will not be surprising if some players choose to stay back in England for a few days, given the heat that is being generated by three successive losses in the Super Eight. The defeat on Tuesday was reminiscent of a lacklusture show by another Indian team against New Zealand at the same venue in the farewell Super Sixes game at the 1999 ICC World Cup.

The picture of Martin Guptill trying to hide his disappointment after failing to save a sinking Kiwi ship told the story as Sri Lanka pipped New Zealand by 48 runs in the Group F match here to march into the semi-finals of the ICC World Twenty20 in Trent Bridge on Tuesday.

The Mendis mystery continued to haunt the Kiwis as the slow bowler finished with the amazing figures of 3-9 while his senior partner Muttiah Muralitharan registered figures of 1-18.

New Zealand got off to a flying start, chasing a competitive 159 for victory against Sri Lanka. Isuru Udana drew the first blood for Sri Lanka by sending back Brendon McCullum cheaply.

Lasith Malinga then took the wicket of Aaron Redmond to push New Zealand on to the back foot while Ajantha Mendis took the wickets of both Ross Taylor and Scott Styris in the same over to give Sri Lanka an upper hand.

The Black Caps never really looked in the hunt as the wickets kept falling on regular intervals. Martin Guptill scored 43 runs off 34 balls and was the only batsman who provided some resistance.

In no time, New Zealand lost more than half their side for less than 100 runs on the board. New Zealand lost their last six wickets for 17 runs.

Earlier, Tillakaratne Dilshan scored 48 and Mahela Jayawardene 41 not out to lead Sri Lanka to 158-5.

Dilshan smashed five boundaries in 37 balls and Jayawardene six fours and six in 29 balls.

Kiwi captain Daniel Vettori was the pick of the bowlers, with 2-32.

New Zealand landed an early blow when Sanath Jaysuriya was caught off the third ball of the innings, offering a simple chance to Ross Taylor after top-edging a delivery from Nathan McCallum to be out for a golden duck.

The decision to move Chamara Silva up the order to No. 3 then backfired when he mishit a ball from Kyle Mills straight to Jacob Oram in the fourth over.

Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership from 32 balls, until the former was caught by Brendon McCullum off Vettori in the 12th over.

Jayawardene smashed Vettori into the top tier of the pavilion two overs later, and Mills went for 14 in the 16th as Sri Lanka accelerated.

Sangakkara was out straight after the pair had completed its half-century stand in 37 balls, caught by Scott Styris off Vettori in the 17th over.

Sri Lanka top the Group F and along with Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals.

A rain curtailed match left England out of the T20 World Cup. England must have felt disheartened at the fact that after scoring a hefty 161 runs the target for West Indies was just 80 runs in 9 overs. Ravi Bopara fared well with the bat scoring 55 runs but all efforts of England batsmen went in vain as West Indies under the safe hands of the Ramnaresh Sarawan & Shivnarine Chanderpaul scampered West Indies for an important win which gave them a spot in the Semi Finals.

Brief summary of the Match:
West Indies 82 for 5 (Sarwan 19*, Chanderpaul 17*) beat England 161 for 6 (Bopara 55, Pietersen 31) by five wickets (D/L method)

Pakistan cruised to a 39-run win against Ireland in the Super Eights at the Oval that booked their place in the semi-finals.

Ireland were asked to bowl first and produced a spirited bowling display that kept Pakistan down to 159 from their 20 overs. The Pakistanis were looking like posting a huge total when openers Kamran Akmal and Shazaib Hasan were at the crease, however when Hasan was caught off the bowling of Andrew Cusack the tempo slowed somewhat.

A brief cameo from Shahid Afridi didnt really take advantage of some tame bowling from the Irish and Kamran Akmal eventually fell for 57 to Trent Johnston, bowled looking to force the pace. Pakistan were struggling for boundaries towards the end of the innings and finished on 159 for nine, a below-par score on such a good batting pitch. Boyd Rankin enhanced his reputation with his four overs going for just 11 and Kyle McCallan taking two wickets.

Ireland were never going to challenge the score and their star man, Niall O’Brien, fell for just seven to teenage seamer Mohammad Aamer. The required run rate was climbing all the time and Ireland’s batsmen looked inadequate in facing the mystery spin of Saeed Ajmal who stemmed the flow of runs by taking four for 19 form his four overs. Umar Gul yet again showed his class at the end of the innings by taking two wickets.

Ireland collapsed to 120 for nine at the end of 20 overs with none of the last seven batsmen making double figures.

This win guaranteed Pakistan’s place in the semi-finals and sent Ireland crashing out of the tournament. Ireland however can leave with their heads held high after a number of encouraging performances. Pakistan seem now to have recovered from their opening day defeat to England and will now be looking to build on the form they are creating.

Pakistan 159-5 (Kamran Akmal 57, McCallan 2-26) beat
Ireland 120-9 (Saeed Ajmal 4-19, Umar Gul 2-19) by 39 runs

A sad end to the world Champions of T20 cricket. India out of the race to become the World champions once again as it was thrashed by West Indies earlier and now by England. by just three runs.

England held nerve to restrict India just three runs from staying in the tournament. A close finish at the end with MS Dhoni and Yousuf Pathan at the crease didn’t have enough firepower to out score the required run. Swann and Sidebottom hampered India chance with great control on the ball scalping two wickets each to do the damage that stopped India’s campaign to defend the championship title. India indeed mised Virendra Sehwag as the highlight of the success of India was a strong opening pair of Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

Match summary:
England 153 for 7 (Pietersen 46, Harbhajan 3-30, Jadeja 2-26) beat India 150 for 5 (Pathan 33*, Sidebottom 2-31, Swann 2-28) by three runs
